LTF PRESS RELEASE

Communities Plan Feb '03

Commenting on the long awaited 'Communities Plan', the recently constituted London Tenants Federation (LTF) states that the valuable contributions they made to the ODPM's 'Blue Skies debate', have been completely ignored.

The LTF was and still is concerned that council tenants be apportioned equal respect for their desire to remain as council tenants. They maintain that all tenants should have a right to a decent home standard without being forced to accept stock transfer, PFI or ALMOs. The LTF supports tenants having choice in housing management structures, but believes that these choices should not be based on financial incentive or disincentive.

LTF representatives suggest that the 'Communities Plan' proposals calls into question the government's commitment to tenant participation and consultation in relation to their homes. At a LTF meeting on Monday 10th February, Eddy Newman of Camden Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations noted 'There is irony in the ODPM document for London being named 'Sustainable communities in London'. A crucial element of a sustainable community is the involvement of its residents in decision making. There is no indication that tenants will be a part of the decision making structures being set up at regional levels.'
